MER's Volunteer Activities

MER volunteers at a number of community events.  Below is a sampling of some of the activities we have participated in the past.

1.)  Beach Sweep

The annual Louisiana Beach Sweep and Inland Waterway Cleanup is a program for cleaning marine and shoreline litter. It is held in conjunction with the International Coastal Cleanup that is sponsored by Ocean Conservancy. We work the whole morning picking up trash and also make a record of the trash that is picked up.

2.)  Earth Day

This is one of the nation's largest environmental festivals. It is held annually in downtown Baton Rouge. We volunteer at various stalls that provide creative hands-on environmental education activities. People gt to know about wetlands, recycling, natural health and healing, earth friendly habitats and other such cool stuff.

3.)  Derelict Crab Trap Removal Program

This is conducted by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. The abandons crab traps are removed to reduce mortality and blue crabs and by-catch, navigational hazards, and decreased visual aesthetics. This is an annual event since 2004.
